Art and Wine: a toast together with the Zavrel Foundation
The illustration has educational value because the combination of images and narrative help young people develop the critical thinking skills they need to navigate a difficult, chaotic world.
Life during the Iron Curtain is not easy for a child who is full of hopes, like Bohemian Stepan Zavrel. As soon as he figures out that his artistic ambitions were bound to be crushed by the regime, Stepan decided to escape from the Czech Republic. His daring, dramatic, yet fascinating escape ends in the summer of 1967 in Rogolo, a small town between Sàrmede and Montaner in the province of Treviso, after many years of wandering. Here begins a whole new story which this small town, nestled on the slopes of the Cansiglio forest, still benefits from. “Stepan had a very strong personality” says Umberto di Remigio, member of the Stepan Zavrel Foundation’s management board. “His unifying force led a great number of artists converging towards the hills and his welcoming house”.
Thanks to the Foundation, the Town of Fairy Tales, many exhibitions, the International School of Illustration and 70 frescoes displayed across the country, the town of Sàrmede is now a fully-fledged “Land of Fairy Tales”.
